How to Minimize False Alarms with Your Home Security System

from:

False alarms on your home security system can put extra stress on everyone concerned, including family members, neighbors, the monitoring service, and the authorities who respond to them. Moreover, in some communities, residents are assessed a fee or fine when their home security systems emit false alarms and the police respond. Use the following tips to help curb false alarms on your home security system, which will save you valuable money, time, and headaches.

Make Sure Everyone Knows How to Use the System

Most home security systems are relatively easy to use and most require a four digit code to disarm, however there isn’t much time so make sure everyone memorizes the code. In addition, some home security systems now use small tags that fit in the palm of your hand. Instead of punching in a code, you simply wave the tag in front of the panel to arm or disarm the system. This may come in handy for those who may have trouble seeing the display or remembering codes.

Sometimes, storms or high winds can interfere with your home security system and set off a false alarm. However, fire and police authorities, as well as neighbors are more apt to understand false alarms if this is indeed the case, as opposed to the alarm going off at all hours due to carelessness. While you certainly can’t control the weather, you can ensure that all members of the household know how to use the system and take the time to make sure all windows and doors are securely closed before arming the system.

Does Your Pet Get Along With Your System?

Many of today’s state of the article home security systems are immune to ordinary household pets. That is, the alarm won’t sound if your pet crosses the beam when you have motion detectors installed. However, if you have an older system or a do it yourself system, make sure that your alarm isn’t going to sound every time your pet walks across the room. The absolute worst thing that could result from frequent false alarms is not getting the help you need when your alarm sounds for real. If your home security system gets the reputation for consistently producing false alarms, neighbors and authorities may learn to ignore the alarms, which could have drastic results in the event of a real emergency.

Test Your System Periodically

Sometimes, false alarms can be the result of a faulty system or faulty components within the system. Most home security companies advise that you test your system once a month to ensure it is working properly. If you happen to find anything wrong with the system or have any questions be sure and get in touch with the company that provides your services. While home security systems are designed to keep us safe, they do require a bit of diligence to work properly.
