Comparing Home Security Companies

from:

It’s easy to compare home security companies online. Just start with your favorite search engine and type in the words “home security.” Once you start filtering through the results, compare the prices and various features that the different home security companies offer. In addition, you’ll be able to find various reviews of these companies, some of them from former and present customers.

Check Credentials

Check the license of any home security company you are thinking of using. Technicians that are coming into your home and installing home security systems should be licensed. You want to know that the home security company you are patronizing is hiring qualified technicians who will do the job right, especially if the job entails hiding wires and drilling holes in your home. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau in your area. This will give you a great amount of information, such as how many complaints have been filed and how many of those complaints have been resolved. The Better Business Bureau will also assign each company they review a grade from A to F so this grade will also give you an idea of how the company works. Don’t be put off simply because complaints exist, though. Just look closely to see how those complaints have been resolved. Make sure they are UL listed and have backup systems. You don’t want to be caught in an emergency situation only to find out that the monitoring company’s systems have gone down. This simply isn’t acceptable. If they indeed have backup systems in place, this will be noted. Also, don’t be concerned if the monitoring facility is not located within your city. It really doesn’t matter where the facility is located as long as it is reliable.

Compare Prices

Price is another important factor when comparing home security companies. It is important to ascertain, though, the differences, if any in the units and services each company is offering. Before you say to yourself, “ABC company’s home security unit costs $500 and XYZ company’s unit cost $800,” make sure you know exactly what each unit is comprised of and if monitoring services are included and at what rate.

Far too often, and for far too many types of goods and services, when consumers make price comparisons, they neglect to look at the specific features of each item. For example, if one home security company is only offering 3 or 4 sensors, the main unit, alarm, and installation, their price is going to be a lot cheaper than a company that is offering 20 sensors, monitoring services, the main unit, and the alarm. It’s also a good idea to go ahead and count the number of sensors you will need when you are pricing home security systems because that is the only way you will get an accurate price. For the most part, you are going to want sensors, if using the magnetic kind, on every point of entry, that is, on every door and every window. Many of the basic units only come with a few sensors and then you have to either upgrade to a higher priced unit altogether or purchase additional sensors so in order to get an accurate price, make sure you know what all you will need first.
