Home Security on a Budget
from:You don’t have to purchase an elaborate home security system to keep your home free of intruders and safe from disasters, such as fire. While we would all like to have a state of the article home security system, not everyone can afford one. Fortunately, there are still some things you can do to keep your home and your family safe.
Home Security Basics
If you are a dog lover and able to have a dog, even a small dog can alert you to the potential of intruders. You don’t have to get a vicious watch dog as some breeds of small dogs will bark at the least little noise. Even if you don’t have a dog, you can still act as if you do by posting “beware of dog” signs and keeping dog bowls and such on the porch or by the back door.
Everyone can and should have working smoke detectors. Too many fatal fires occur in homes with nonworking smoke detectors. Either people forget to replace the batteries when they go dead or they take them out after being annoyed by smoke detectors that go off when cooking. It’s best just to open a window or turn on a fan rather than removing smoke detector batteries as it is too easy to forget to put them back. On the same note, carbon monoxide detectors, while more expensive than smoke detectors, are still less than $100 and quite inexpensive when you consider they can save your life. Whole families have been killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, which could be prevented with a single detector in the home.
Lights and Timers
Timers that are programmed to turn on and off lights are great for people who are away on vacation or who work a lot or are otherwise out of the home a great deal. Along with stopping your mail and newspaper delivery, making sure lights turn on and off and different times make your home look lived in and discourage intruders. Also, consider installing lights on the outside of your home, especially near walkways and entranceways. You can get the kind that only come on when motion is sensed, which will ensure brightness when it is needed, yet they won’t use a lot of energy or run up your electric bill.
Do It Yourself Alarm Systems
You can also install a simple alarm system that sounds an alarm whenever a door or window is opened. Some of these can be purchased for as little as $100 and require a minimum of installation. Sure, you won’t have a sophisticated monitoring service calling the police for you but you will have neighbors who will hear the alarm and chances are the alarm will scare off the intruders anyway.
Don’t ignore home security just because you can’t afford a state of the art home security system because there are many things you can do to help ensure the safety of you and your family.
