Light Up Your Patio and Deck

from:

When it comes to outdoor entertaining, nothing is more useful than a well-designed patio or deck. Both structures provide an inviting outdoor “room” for parties, picnics, and other get-togethers. Home improvement gurus often recommend spending hundreds and even thousands of dollars to improve your outdoor space, but it may take a lot less time and money to get a lot more use out of the space.

Entertaining outdoors at night in warm weather is a welcome change from the stuffiness of the indoors. It’s even more fun when you know some easy and inexpensive tips and tricks for deck and patio improvement. You can create more interesting effects, and make your patio or deck an even more welcoming gathering spot in daylight or at night, by adding outdoor lighting.

Consider the many benefits of outdoor lighting. Lighting can be especially helpful in improving the safety of your surroundings. Decks are often multi-tiered with stairs and various elevations. Deck or patio lighting illuminates foreboding corners and areas that may otherwise be unused at night due to dark shadows. Lights can be installed underneath stairs or on decorative posts to bring those areas to life and create a safer outdoor “room”.

Another good reason to include lighting on your patio or deck is to highlight the special features, plants, and structures. If you have a particularly large and beautiful plant, you can install up-lighting which will cast light upward around the base of the plant. Lights installed directly in front of an object such as a statue or ornate item will spotlight the beauty of the structure from a distance.

A more dramatic effect can be created by installing lights behind a large object. Have the light face upward from behind the object and against a wall as a backlight. The object will be silhouetted against the wall and the shadows will be quite impressive.

If you are fortunate enough to have natural trees and shrubs around your patio and deck, you have an optimal opportunity to enhance the natural beauty. Placing lights in the trees or around the base of shrubbery can create incredible aesthetic effects. The lights in trees cast shadows and light around the garden and surroundings for a calming effect. Small twinkle lights are even more impressive with outdoor lighting.

Using your patio or deck for daytime and nighttime activities is a good way to make the best of your outdoor living space. Creating a space that is inviting and welcoming to family and guests starts with comfortable seating and is enhanced with different types of lighting around the area.

To take advantage of the outdoor “room”, decide which elements of the deck or patio are most impressive. Focus on larger plants, sculptures, and objects that can have a more glamorous effect at night when different types of light are used. Lanterns, lamps, and candles can also increase the beauty of your outdoor space.

And don’t forget those inexpensive string lights, rope lights, ball string lights, and spheres that can be purchased at Target, Wal-Mart, and other inexpensive places. They can add a special touch to railings, table tops, and stairways.

Don’t just use your deck and patio for summer afternoons. Extend its life and use by adding outdoor lighting and taking advantage of the beauty of the outdoors and the glitter of the moon and starlight at the same time.
