Save energy with your water heater

from:

The water heater is the third wasteful use of energy in the home. Since it is used for about every function regarding the use of water, it tends to waste energy with a setting that is generally too high. Learning to lower the settings of the water heater will save money and energy.

To save money many people decide to install a new water heater. The fact they realize the current water heater is not energy efficient means they are thinking about saving money and energy. Yet there are other factors to consider when purchasing a water heater.

The size of water heater can mean using the water heater too much thus hot really saving money or energy as desired. To determine the size of the water heater is to consider the amount of water used during the busiest time of the day. This fact can be determined by an internet chart or by inquiring a sales associate at the home improvement store.

The gas water heater is more energy efficient than the electric water heater. It takes less energy to heat the water in a gas water heater than it does to heat the water in the electric water heater. So generally, it is advisable to purchase a gas water heater instead of the electric water heater.

Storage water heaters are the most common type of water heater used. They range in size from 20 to 80 gallons and are available in electric, gas, propane, or oil system. They use less energy based on the methods used to heat the water within the system.

Even if there is not going to be a replacement water heater, there are still ways to save energy. Learn to conserve water by avoiding letting the water run before using the shower or doing dishes by hand. Take shorter showers instead of the thirty-minute shower shorten the time to fifteen minutes and save water in the process.

Add insulation to the outside of the water heater. The average water heater has a limited amount of insulation, which then means the heat of the water is wasted adding to the negative aspect of wasting energy. Insulate the pipes of the water heater. This is another place the heat is lost. A large amount of heat is lost when the pipes are not insulated before the water ever reaches the tap.

Lower the temperature of the water heater. The recommended setting is 120 degrees. This setting will still provide the desired hot water while saving energy and money in the process. Lowering the temperature can save about 4% on the energy bill a year.

By taking the time to make changes of the current situations regarding the water heater, a savings of money and energy will follow. Take the time to save money and energy by doing the little things to increase the efficiency of the water heater.
